This is a lithographic print after the pastel drawing by French illustrator and artist Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola (1871 – 1950) known as “Portrait of a Young Lady with Brown Hair.” The original 1928 pastel was seen at auction at Christie’s, London in 2007 and was exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts (per the label to the verso). This piece is numbered #6568, according to the reference information on the back. The reverse side of the piece includes information about the Beaux Arts Collection, the museum where the piece was purchased. The artwork measures 12 and 1/2 inches by 9 and 1/8 wide. The frame is 19 by 16 and 1/2. The piece is in good vintage condition, and it presents beautifully.

“Work and Industry, “43” Magnificent Allegorical Relief Panel with Male Indian

This rare and magnificent bas relief panel by Rudolf Mayer entitled “Handel Und Industrie” or “Work and Industry,” makes fascinating use of German workers and a Native American to represent trade and Industrial Production in turn-of-the-century Germany. To the left is a young potter and an older blacksmith with a sailing ship in the background and to the right is a dignified Indian warrior, accepting compensation for his pelts. The jumble of European and American imagery is fascinating — the presence of the Indian in loincloth illustrates the German fascination with Native Americans, though ironically he is shown accompanied by a German Shepherd! The relief’s large size suggests that it was meant to hang in an institution or commercial setting; it is molded metal with a bronze patina.

“Algernon Sullivan Plaque, ” Rare Bas Relief with Nude Figures by Jules Roine

This rare and important relief sculpture honors Algernon Sydney Sullivan, one of the most admired and respected attorneys and civic leaders active in New York in the late 19th century. Born a Hoosier, he moved to New York by 1860, and though an ardent abolitionist, felt honor-bound to step forward to defend the sailors of the Confederate ship Savannah, captured by the Union early in the Civil War. He served in the public sector for a decade and fought the Tweed gang. Later, Sullivan created two of the more important and influential law firms in New York in his era — one of them, Sullivan and Cromwell, continues today — but he always remained supportive of the poor who could not afford to retain an attorney for legal assistance. In his honor, the Sullivan Fountain was erected in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and in 1925, the New York Southern Society commissioned Jules Roine to sculpt this award, given to outstanding students in Eastern universities who exhibited Sullivan’s ideals of heart, mind, and conduct, informed by a spirit of helpfulness to others. This allegorical plaque includes a portrait of Sullivan to the left, and an idealized, semi-nude youth
