— ABOUT THE ARTWORK THAT INSPIRED THIS RUG:

A red fire glows as a magnet in a desert at the end of the day, recalling Paul Klee’s trip to Egypt in the winter of 1928-29. A striated composition, born from the cliffs and fields of the Nile Valley.

The way in which the vertical intersections carry the weight and distribute the density of the piece reminds us of Klee’s lecture at the Bauhaus years before, on December 12, 1921:

“A Sense of Equilibrium, an element of artistic creation…When the base widens, the horizontal widens with it at the expense of the vertical. A very considerable relaxation occurs then, an epic moment in relationship to the dramatic character of the vertical. Which obviously does not exclude an evaluation of the thrusts from each side of the axis. The vertical is always present! The weight of the forces is only excluded at the moment the diagonal disappears and the balance is immobilized, as, for example, in the case of the most primitive rhythm of the structure in which only horizontals or verticals are present.”

Swiss artist Paul Klee was born on December 18th, 1879. Art played a strong role since his childhood, particularly music. He studied in Munich, Germany, and later settled in Bern, Switzerland. After marrying pianist Lily Stumpf, they moved to Munich again. There he met great avant-garde artists, such as Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Marc and Macke, and successfully exposed his work.

During his travels, he gained revelatory insights and art influences. In Paris, he met Delaunay and became more familiar with Braque’s and Picasso’s work. In Tunisia, he fell in love with colour, making it a core point of his art afterwards.

Klee was a teacher at the acclaimed Bauhaus School from 1921 to 1936, both in Weimar and Dessau. During this time, he grew closer to Kandinsky and Feininger. His art was being recognized and exhibited in the United States and France, as well as Germany. When the Nazis closed the Bauhaus in 1933, Klee moved back to Switzerland, where he passed away on June 29th, 1940.
