— About the artwork on which this rug is based: “Composition VIII”:
Wassily Kandinsky created “Composition VIII” in 1923. The painting represents the Kandinsky’s transition from his Munich style of Expressionism to abstract geometric form and structure and is considered a peak in his work during that period.
“Composition VIII” is characterized by the use of tools such as compasses and rulers to draw circular and parallel-linear geometric shapes. This technique was influenced by the Russian painter Alexander Mikhailovich Rodchenko, who used it for his sketches and paintings related to Suprematism and Constructivism.
Kandinsky creates more spatial depth and less schematic than Rodchenko, but also uses elements of Suprematism and Constructivism. The geometric forms circle (partially with aura), square, trapezoid, lines, a freehand wavy line, and checkerboard pattern are executed in mostly bright colors with shadowy parts.
Kandinsky himself sees the circle as the “synthesis of the greatest opposites. It combines the concentric with the eccentric in a balanced figure. Among the three primary forms, it is the clearest turn to the fourth dimension”. These circles remind of cosmic bodies and the inner sound described by Kandinsky.
The painting was one of the first to be purchased by Solomon R. Guggenheim in 1930 when he visited the Bauhaus, marking the beginning of a large collection now exhibited in the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
— About Wassily Kandinsky:
“Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”- Wassily Kandinsky
Wassily Kandinsky is recognized as a pioneer of abstract art. He was one of the first artists to use purely abstract compositions, abandoning recognizable forms in favor of shapes and colors that were intended to convey emotion and spirituality.
Kandinsky’s innovative approach to art continues to be celebrated today for its profound impact on the field of modern art.
His work has inspired countless artists, and his influence can be seen in abstract painting, graphic design, and even architecture.
“For Kandinsky, art was not just about creating beautiful objects, but about expressing spiritual truths and inner emotion through color and form.” – Vivien Greene, Senior Curator of 19th- and Early- 20th-Century Art at Guggenheim Museum.
Kandinsky’s art can be found in various museums and galleries around the world, including the Lenbachhaus Gallery in Munich and the Guggenheim Museum of New York. Additionally, it can also be found in private collections.
Now, it can be found in your home too, translated into a refined handmade rug from your favorite Kandinsky painting.
