“Mercury’s Heaven”: color lithograph illustrating Canto VI of Paradise, from Dante’s Divine Comedy.
It is signed Dali lower left, and is justified EA right.
Good condition, in a mat
The Divine Comedy: in 1302, Dante is banished from Florence. During his nineteen years of exile, he wrote the Commedia, a work he wrote not in Latin but in the vernacular of Florence, his native language, and which is today considered the first great text in Italian.
In 1950, to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the poet’s birth, the Italian State Polygraphic Institute asked Dalí to illustrate The Divine Comedy. Unfortunately, the commission was cancelled: in the end, the artist’s hundred original watercolors were reproduced in a limited edition art book published by the French publisher Joseph Foret between 1959 and 1963, in collaboration with Éditions d’Art Les Heures Claires.
