Beautifully sculpted and cast, this large and remarkable bronze urn is enlivened with a series of nude mythological figures in bas relief, the dark bronze color highlighted with areas of verdigris, indicating that it sat in an outdoor garden. The figures are superbly modeled, and the relief is high, bringing great drama to the scenes. The figures are clearly inspired by Greek and Roman sculpture, but the two large handles are executed in a florid, Renaissance manner. The bronze is heavy and substantial, indicating that it dates to the turn of the 20th century, and the piece sits on a marble base.
